Tom Brady declines to mentor RGIII

BOSTON, April 21 (UPI) -- Tom Brady was crazy enough to jump off of a cliff, but not enough to give pointers to Robert Griffin III this offseason.

"If I get a chance to sit down and talk to him (Brady), I'd love to, just to pick his brain," Griffin told CSN Washington in August. "But he's also still playing quarterback in the NFL. It's a competitive position, a competitive sport. So I don't expect him to give me any groundbreaking secrets."

But Brady responded to the Washington quarterback at joint practices with: "Not until my career is done, Rob," according to Jeff Darlington.

Griffin told Darlington that Brady cited a "competitive landscape" as his reasoning for not giving him tips.

"What you do learn from watching (Brady) -- and then watching the Patriots organization -- you get a big-picture look at it," Griffin told Darlington. "Man, honestly, they operate like a high school football team. You remember in high school, how the coach calls everybody up, everybody runs up, gets on a knee and looks at the coach like what he is saying is the most important thing in the world? That's how the Patriots are."

Griffin has been on a roller coaster ride since winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012. Griffin, 25, is 679 of 1063, with 8,097 passing yards, 40 passing touchdowns and 23 interceptions, with a 90 quarterback rating since 2012.

Brady, 37, was 954 of 1,541, with 10,227 passing yards, 69 passing touchdowns and 38 interceptions, with an 86 quarterback rating in his first three seasons as a starting quarterback. Brady also won three super bowl titles during that stretch.
