April 14 (UPI) -- The New York Knicks went to the playoffs in three of four seasons before the arrival of Phil Jackson.

Since he became the team's president of basketball operations, the franchise has averaged just 26 wins per season. Yet Jackson has his sights set on Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony.

On Friday, Jackson said that Anthony "would be better off somewhere else."

"We've not been able to win with [Anthony] on the court at this time," Jackson told reporters at his press conference. "I think the direction with our team is that he's a player that would be better off somewhere else and using his talent somewhere where he can win or chase that championship."

After hearing the press conference, Anthony posted a photo of Leonardo DiCaprio from the Great Gatsby on his Instagram account. The caption for the photo said: "Really," with laughing emojis.

Anthony, 32, made $24.5 million this season. He is due $26.2 million in 2017. The 10-time All-Star is considering waving his no-trade clause this summer, according to ESPN.

Anthony has been rumored in trade talk several times throughout the last few seasons.

Jackson maintains that the Knicks want a significant player in return for Anthony if the franchise does decide to move on from its superstar.

Anthony averaged 22.4 points per game this season for the Knicks. The Knicks picked up Jackson's two-year option Thursday morning.

"I have a lot of thinking and reflecting to do," Anthony told ESPN. "It's all on me at this point."

The New York Post reported that Anthony met Thursday with Jackson, coach Jeff Hornacek, and general manager Steve Mills.

Anthony told Jackson last year that he wanted to stay with the Knicks.
