June 15 (UPI) -- Chicago White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal will miss the remainder of the 2021 MLB season after having surgery to repair tendon tears in his right hamstring. The team said in a statement that Madrigal had the procedure Tuesday at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. According to the team, he is expected to be ready for spring training next year.

"To have the surgery, it clears away some of the uncertainty. I think this way it's a way to put it behind him and start fresh," White Sox manager Tony La Russa said. "It takes the decision out of him and he can take his time and make sure he's 100%."
La Russa noted that Danny Mendick and Leury Garcia will continue to see playing time at second base in Madrigal's absence.
Madrigal was assisted off the field after he attempted to beat out a grounder in the seventh inning of the White Sox's 6-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on June 9. Before the injury, he had been rounding into form, batting .365 with two home runs and 10 RBIs over his past 20 games.
The 24-year-old Madrigal, who was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 amateur draft, ends the season with a .305 batting average, two home runs, 21 RBIs, 10 doubles and four triples.
Madrigal is one of three key position players currently injured for the first-place White Sox. Left fielder Eloy Jimenez ruptured his left pectoral tendon during spring training, and center fielder Luis Robert tore his right hip flexor last month.
