Mike Trout: Angels star robs Nelson Cruz, hits two bombs

June 13 (UPI) -- Mike Trout hit two home runs and robbed another in the outfield in a Los Angeles Angels loss to the Seattle Mariners.

The robbery came first in the 6-3 loss Tuesday at Safeco Field in Seattle. Mariners designated hitter Nelson Cruz was facing Angels starter Jaime Barria in the bottom of the third inning. Cruz went up to the plate with the Mariners already leading 1-0 and with a runner standing on first base.

Barria tossed in a 2-1 slider, which Cruz smacked deep to center field. Trout tracked the ball back to the warning track, before timing a jump perfectly and snagging the baseball with the webbing of his glove, possibly robbing a home run from the Mariners slugger and ending the inning.

The Mariners carried a slim advantage into the top of the fifth inning, before Trout tied it up. The Angels superstar stepped in to face Mariners starter Mike Leake as the third batter of the frame. Leake went up 0-2 in the count, before throwing Trout an 82-mph slider. Trout turned on the offering and sent it to left center field.

The solo shot travelled 394-feet, according to Statcast.

Mitch Haniger got the lead back for the Mariners in the bottom of the inning, hitting a two-run bomb off of Barria. Ryon Healy added to the lead with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning.

But Trout tried to pull his team back, homering again in the top of the seventh frame. Trout stepped in against Mariners reliever Ryan Cook during that exchange. The righty had a 2-2 count against the slugger, before lobbing in an 89.6-mph changeup. Trout jumped on the pitch and sent it to left field for a 412-foot two-run homer run, cutting the Angels' deficit to one run.

Those would be the last runs for the Angels, while the Mariners got an RBI double from Jean Segura in the seventh inning and a solo shot from Healy in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Trout now leads Major League Baseball with 23 home runs. He is hitting .310 and has 44 RBIs. The two-time MVP also leads baseball with 56 runs scored, a .438 on-base percentage, .207 OPS and 165 total bases.

Trout also hit two home runs in the Angels' loss Monday to the Mariners.
