D-Backs' Souza: Moms should get more than one-day holiday

By Alex Butler

May 14 (UPI) -- Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Steven Souza Jr. made his feelings known about Mother's Day during a 6-4 loss to the Washington Nationals.

The right-fielder was wearing a live microphone Sunday at Chase Field in Phoenix during the loss. The broadcast crew cut to Souza several times during the game to hear his flaming-hot takes.

"I probably should say Happy Mother's Day to my wife ... and my mother and my grandmother ... and my mother-in-law," Souza said. "Gotta lot of mothers."

"My wife is unreal. Mother's Day doesn't even describe how amazing she is. There should be a Mother's Week or a Mother's Month ... a Mother's Year."

Earlier in the game, Souza approached teammates Paul Goldschmidt and Chris Owings and asked if they wanted to deliver a message -- through his hot mic -- to the mothers in their lives.

"Love you, mom," Owings shouted.

"I don't think you have to yell though," Souza said.

The Diamondbacks left-fielder later commented on his slump.

"Baseball is a fickle game," he said. "It has been a week, I've got three hits. Feels like its been a year."

Souza, 29, went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the loss. He is hitting .103 on the season, but all of the moms in his life are probably still proud.
