Vandals tear up 'Field of Dreams' field in Iowa

By Alex Butler

Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Field of Dreams officials are trying to raise money after vandals drove a truck on and ripped up the grounds in Dyersville, Iowa.

The vandalism occurred on Monday night on the field, made famous in the 1989 film starring Kevin Costner.

"Last night, our beloved Field was vandalized," the Field of Dreams Movie Site Facebook page said in a status update Tuesday. "We cannot fathom why a soul on this planet would desecrate this holy ground. We pray for whomever did this to our special place that they find peace in their hearts. Before Opening Day, April 1, we will work toward repairing this damage."

Field of Dreams owner Denise Stillman started a GoFundMe campaign for the field on Tuesday.

"On the morning of Jan 23, 2018, we found your beloved Field of Dreams Movie Site ball diamond destroyed by truck tire damage," Stillman wrote on the fundraising website. "Many areas of the turf had been ripped up with potential damage to the refurbished irrigation system. This campaign will fund those repairs and install a security system to help protect this magical baseball shrine for the 100,000 visitors each season worldwide to enjoy."

The GoFundMe campaign raised more than $2,800 of its $15,000 goal in 15 hours.
