Guy proposes at Fenway Park; 'she said no'

May 2 (UPI) -- More than 36,000 fans let a man know that his girlfriend rejected his marriage proposal at Fenway Park.

The Boston Red Sox might have cruised to a 6-2 victory Sunday over the Chicago Cubs, but this guy was not winning after making the extremely public request.

He got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend just before 10 p.m. at the historic ballpark.

The proposal was broadcast on the Jumbotron. But cameras quickly darted away from the scene when the proposal went wrong, according to multiple reports and videos posted on social media.

The Boston Globe reported that there was no hug or visual answer to the question.

Fans at the ballpark originally chanted for the woman to say yes. After the crowd realized she declined the proposal, they chanted: "She said no."

A stadium cameraman is seen near the scene, turning away his lens and standing awkwardly near the couple.

According to the Red Sox Foundation, scoreboard messages require a tax deductible donation from $50 to $100. The Red Sox Foundation is the official 501(c)3 team charity. Orders must be placed by 6 p.m. the day before a game and can't be longer than 90 characters.

The messages are then placed on the New Balance scoreboard above the right field bleachers. The messages run in the middle and end of the second inning and middle and end of the third inning.

There are no refunds offered for the messages, regardless of successful or unsuccessful marriage proposals.

There was an official attendance Sunday of 36,916.

The Red Sox (13-12) host the Orioles (16-8) in the second game of the four-game series at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday at Fenway Park.
