Panthers waive FS Boston, four others

May 2 (UPI) -- Carolina Panthers brass made the decision to cut five players Tuesday, including the team's starting free safety.

The team announced it was waiving Tre Boston, fullback Devon Johnson, tackles Jordan Rigsbee and Jake Rodgers, and cornerback Lou Young.

Boston played three seasons for the Panthers after getting picked in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The North Carolina product had 93 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks and an interception for a touchdown in 42 games. He also defended 11 passes. Boston made 16 starts for the Panthers.

Johnson signed with the Panthers in 2016 as an undrafted free agent rookie out of California. He spent last season on inured reserve after hurting his knee in the Panthers' final preseason game last season.

Rodgers has been a part of the New York Giants' and Panthers' practice squads since joining in the NFL in 2015.

Young has also spent time on NFL practice squads for the Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars and Panthers. He played in six games for the Panthers in 2016.

Mike Adams, who signed with the Panthers as a free agent this offseason, is expected to start at safety. He has made the Pro Bowl in two of his last three seasons. The Panthers' roster currently sits at 86 players before rookie minicamp.

After spending its first-round pick on Christian McCaffrey, the Panthers drafted RB Cutis Samuel, OG Taylor Moton, DE Daeshon Hall, LB Corn Elder, FB Alex Armah and K Harrison Butler. On Monday the franchise signed college free agents in LB Ben Boulware, DE Bryan Cox, WR Austin Duke, CB Cole Luke, and WR Fred Ross.

Panthers rookie minicamp kicks off Friday.
