SEATTLE, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Right-hander Yovani Gallardo is headed out west.

The former Baltimore Orioles pitcher was traded to the Seattle Mariners Friday, in exchange for outfielder Seth Smith.

The Mariners also received cash considerations in the deal.

Gallardo was 6-8 with a 5.32 ERA in 23 starts last season. He owns a career 3.79 ERA. He was named an All-Star in 2010 after posting a 14.7 record with a 3.84 ERA for the Milwaukee Brewers.

"Gallardo gives us the veteran presence that we have been searching for," Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said in a release. "He has a track record of durability and success as a starting pitcher. After examining the free agent and trade market, Yovani is the best fit for our club as we move forward this offseason."

Smith, 34, hit 16 home runs and had 63 RBI in 137 games last season for the Mariners. He played the first five years of his career for the Colorado Rockies.
