Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A vote next year will decide whether Barcelona will expand their existing stadium Camp Nou or build a completely new one nearby. The sale of ‘temporary’ naming rights is currently being considered to raise the 300 million euros required.
"The referendum will be in the first or second quarter of 2014, February or July, we will not wait long,” club vice-president for economic matters Javier Faus said. “First we will have to decide if the two options -- remodelling and the new stadium -- are viable. If they are the question will be very simple: a, b or c, which would be to leave things as they are.”
The Camp Nou's current capacity is 99,354 and is one of the most recognizable stadiums in international soccer.
Board spokesman Toni Freixa wrote on the club's official website about the two choices: "The construction of a new stadium on the land on Diagonal, property which belongs to the University of Barcelona, or a profound remodelling project that would constitute a new stadium keeping the current structure of the Camp Nou.
"Both would have a capacity of 105,000 spectators, the stadium would be covered, there will be a construction of a new Palau with a capacity of 12,000 spectators, an adjacent court with a capacity of 2,000 spectators, 6,000 new parking spots and access to the Ciutat Esportiva of the Miniestadi."
