Washington Capitals re-sign Dmitry Orlov to six-year deal

The Washington Capitals re-signed defenseman Dmitry Orlov to a six-year, $30.6 million contract, the team announced Friday.

Orlov, 25, could have become a restricted free agent on Saturday.

The 5-foot-11, 212-pound Orlov registered 33 points (six goals, 27 assists) in 82 games with the Capitals during the 2016-17 season, recording career highs in assists and points. During the playoffs last season, he totaled three assists in 13 games.

Orlov played in all 82 regular-season games for the second straight season. In 2015-16, he recorded 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists), posting career highs in goals and game-winning goals with three.

The Novokuznetsk, Russia, native was drafted by the Capitals in the second round (55th overall) of the 2009 NHL draft. He owns 93 points (20 goals, 73 assists) in 283 career games with Washington.

Orlov represented Russia at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, three World Championships (2014, 2016, 2017), two World Junior Championships (2010, 2011) and two World U18 Championships (2008, 2009). He won a gold medal with Russia at the 2014 World Championship and won a gold medal at the 2011 World Junior Championship. In addition, he earned a bronze medal at the 2016 World Championship.
