Edmonton Oilers waive forward Benoit Pouliot

The Edmonton Oilers placed forward Benoit Pouliot on waivers for the purpose of buying out the remainder of his contract, the team announced Thursday.

Pouliot signed a five-year contract worth $20 million in 2014. The move will allow the Oilers to save approximately $2.67 million in both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, according to CapFriendly.com.

The 30-year-old Pouliot collected eight goals and six assists in 67 games in 2016-17. He did not record a point in 13 playoff contests.

Pouliot has notched 117 goals and 127 assists in 551 career games with the Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers and Oilers. He was selected with the fourth overall pick by the Wild in the 2005 NHL draft.
