Calgary Flames pick up Eddie Lack in three-player trade

The Calgary Flames acquired goaltender Eddie Lack, defenseman Ryan Murphy and a 2019 seventh-round draft pick from the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday in exchange for defenseman Keegan Kanzig and a 2019 sixth-round pick.

Carolina will be responsible for half of Lack's $2.75 million salary for the upcoming season.

"He ticked all of the boxes we were looking at," Flames general manager Brad Treliving told CalgaryFlames.com about Lack. "He's a very big goaltender. Very athletic. Great work ethic.

"He's played a lot of NHL hockey ... When Ryan Miller got hurt in Vancouver, he came in and performed admirably under pressure.

"We did a lot of homework on the person as well. (Flames coach Glen Gulutzan) coached him in Vancouver and knows him very well ... it's really critical to determine the type of person you're bringing in."

Lack, a 29-year-old native of Sweden, spent the 2016-17 season with the Hurricanes, where he picked up eight wins in 19 games along with a .902 save percentage and a 2.64 goals-against average. In four seasons in the NHL, lack is 54-51 with a .911 save percentage and a 2.56 GAA.

Murphy, 24, was the 12th overall pick in 2011 draft. He has six goals and 31 assists to go along with a minus-36 rating in 151 career NHL games.

Kanzig, 22, completed his first professional season in 2016-17 season, spitting the year between AHL Stockton and ECHL Adirondack. The Athabasca, Alberta, native earned two assists in six games with Stockton, and he added one goal and four assists in 40 games with Adirondack. He was drafted in the third round by the Flames in 2013.
