Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will work with the scout team again this week as he continues his recovery from a compression fracture in his back sustained in the preseason.

Coach Jason Garrett said the Cowboys will look at how Romo practices before deciding whether the veteran would be active Sunday at the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"We just have to see where he is," Garrett told reporters Wednesday. "Tony's practiced four days over the last couple of weeks and has been involved in part of practices on each of those days. We'll do something similar with him today. He'll start in individuals and see how he does. He'll be working some scout-team reps like he did last week.

"We'll just take the situation day-by-day. We have a number of guys who are injured on the team, and that's what we do. We see how they do in individual and maybe they roll and get more into practice. We do anticipate Tony getting some good, positive work today. We will evaluate his situation day-by-day."

Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has taken the league by storm since debuting in Romo's absence, leading Dallas to a 7-1 record and a share of the NFL's best record while also complicating the decision of just which quarterback will be under center when Romo returns to health.

Romo was cleared for full practice last week. ESPN's Ed Werder reported Wednesday that the decision whether Romo can play is a coaches' decision and no longer a medical one.

"I think it's all just stages, getting the guys closer and ready to play in a game," Garrett said. "Tony hasn't played in a game in nearly a year, 50 weeks. So you want to get a guy out there again and again and again moving around with people around him. First week he did individual. He did 7-on-7. The next week he did more 11-on-11 with people around him. And those are all positive steps."

Romo has not had any setbacks in his practice work the last two weeks.

"He's champing at the bit but we'll watch him today at practice and see how he does," Garrett said.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admitted Tuesday what many were thinking in regard to the team's quarterback situation.

"The key thing I want to emphasize is we probably are never going to have this totally sorted out," Jones said during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan. "We're going to play it by ear, play it as it comes. We can do that."

Romo, 36, has 12 NFL seasons under his belt -- all with Dallas -- and is a four-time Pro Bowler. The oft-injured quarterback has never reached the NFC Championship Game, only twice making it out of the first round.

The 23-year-old Prescott, taken in the fourth round out of Mississippi State, has thrown for 2,020 yards and 12 touchdowns opposite two interceptions in eight games.
