Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was back at work Monday after a trip to the hospital from a sideline collision.

Phillips was taken off the sidelines on a stretcher Sunday after being hit by a San Diego Chargers player in the Broncos' 27-19 victory.

"He was sitting in the back of the meeting just now, got a big smile on his face,'' Broncos coach Gary Kubiak told reporters Monday. "He's sore, but he's back at it. I'm trying to get him to go home and rest a little bit. ... He's good, he's himself.''

The 69-year-old Phillips took to Twitter with his usual humor: "They say it was a collision on the sideline but actually I got run over. ... Thanks and I appreciate everyone's concern -- I am ok today and back to work at what I love -- I get the big hit award for the week!''

In the second quarter, Chargers running back Melvin Gordon went out of bounds after an interception and knocked Phillips to the ground while chasing Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby.

Philips was knocked off his feet and fell backward, appearing to hit the back of his head when he hit the ground.

The game was stopped for several minutes with players on both teams taking a knee and watching medical staff tend to Phillips.

Phillips was placed on a stretcher and immobilized before being lifted onto a cart and driven off the field, and then taken by ambulance to a hospital. Following further tests for evaluation, he was released from the hospital later Sunday night.

"Just got the heck knocked out of him,'' Kubiak said Monday. "(Gordon) kind of caught Wade up high and looked like the back of his head hit the ground pretty hard. Just a scary situation ... Just feel very fortunate that he's OK."
