Atlanta Braves reliever Jose Ramirez was suspended three games and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing a pitch near the head of Miami's Jose Fernandez on Wednesday, Major League Baseball announced Friday.

The right-handed Ramirez threw inside to Fernandez in the seventh inning, which led to both benches clearing onto the field. No punches were thrown in the fracas and Ramirez was ejected.

Ramirez filed an appeal so he remains eligible to play for the Braves. Atlanta hosts the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

In the fifth inning, Fernandez was the recipient of an inside pitch from Braves starter Julio Teheran.

Teheran hit Miami's Martin Prado with a pitcher earlier in the contest and Fernandez drilled Atlanta's Nick Markakis.
