Baltimore Ravens lose TE Benjamin Watson for season

Tight end Benjamin Watson of the Baltimore Ravens, who is coming off the most productive season of his career, is out for the season after tearing his right Achilles tendon on the first play of Saturday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions.

The 35-year-old Watson was the Ravens' first free-agent signing of this offseason. He sustained the injury when he tripped while running a pass pattern. He had to be carried off the field.

Watson, who has played 12 NFL seasons, had 74 receptions for 825 yards receiving and six touchdowns last season for the New Orleans Saints. He missed only one game the past four seasons.

It leaves the Ravens with only one healthy tight end with NFL experience, Crockett Gillmore.

The Ravens have not had the services of Dennis Pitta, who has a broken finger, and Maxx Williams, who is sidelined for undisclosed reasons, for most of preseason camp.
