Five Notre Dame players arrested in traffic stop

Five Notre Dame football players were arrested Friday night after an Indiana State Police trooper reported finding a loaded handgun and marijuana in the car.

According to the police report, senior safety Max Redfield, redshirt freshman cornerback Ashton White, freshman wide receiver Kevin Stepherson, sophomore running back Dexter Williams and sophomore linebacker Te'von Coney were each charged with possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor. In addition, Redfield, Stepherson and Williams were charged with possession of a handgun without a license, a misdemeanor.

Redfield has been a starter at safety the past two seasons and was the Irish's fourth-leading tackler in 2015 with 64 total tackles, and he had one interception. Williams appeared in six games last season at running back, with 21 carries for 81 yards and one touchdown.

The players were stopped by the trooper in Fulton County -- which is about 50 miles outside of South Bend -- for driving 73 mph in a 60-mph zone, according to police. Officers found a handgun and marijuana after searching the car, according to the police report.

In a separate incident, Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler was arrested early Saturday morning near campus on preliminary charges of battery to law enforcement and resisting law enforcement.

Notre Dame will open the season at Texas on Sept. 4.
