Free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick hopes to re-sign with the New York Jets even though the two sides have not been close in negotiations.

"I had a great time with the guys last year and I want to continue doing this. I'm still preparing for the season," Fitzpatrick said Monday on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "It's been a process and the good thing about it is the discussions have been behind closed doors."

Fitzpatrick and the Jets reportedly remain far apart on reaching a deal. The Jets have offered Fitzpatrick between $7 million and $8 million per year and the veteran is thought to be seeking twice that amount.

"You would drive yourself crazy looking at other contracts around the league," Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick had a career year last season, throwing for 3,905 yards with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in his first year with the Jets. Fitzpatrick led the Jets to a 10-6 record -- narrowly missing the playoffs -- and set the franchise mark for touchdown passes.

"I would like to be back," Fitzpatrick later told ESPN.com at Willie Colon's charity golf outing at Hudson National Golf Club in Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y

The 33-year-old Fitzpatrick denied rumors that he may retire if he doesn't receive the money from the Jets or another team. The Jets' organized team activities begin Tuesday.

"I'm playing," Fitzpatrick said. "I'm playing football next year."
