Dallas Mavericks point guard Deron Williams plans to decline the player option in his contract and become a free agent, ESPN.com reported on Friday.

Williams just finished the first season of a two-year contract. He averaged 14.1 points and 5.8 assists this season.

Williams will soon undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia that curtailed him during Dallas' five-game series playoff loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Williams came to Dallas -- his hometown -- to revive his career after being a huge disappointment during his four-plus seasons with the Brooklyn Nets.

"I would love to be back," Williams told reporters recently in regards to his interest in remaining with the Mavericks. "This was a great year for me. My family is settled and happy here, so it'd definitely be great to be back."

Of players scheduled to become free agent, Memphis' Mike Conley is considered the top point guard.
