New York Mets place C Travis d'Arnaud on disabled list

New York Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right rotator cuff strain, the team announced Tuesday.

The shoulder flared up while d'Arnaud attempted to throw out a base stealer in Monday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. He felt more pain during an at-bat in the sixth inning and finally departed in the eighth.

"I felt it bark up so I decided to say something," d'Arnaud told reporters. "I've never experienced it before. That's why I said something, just to be safe."

d'Arnaud was evaluated Tuesday prior to the decision to place him on the disabled list.

"He's got a bad shoulder from throwing," Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters. "That's what we're concerned about. Anytime you talk about a shoulder problem with a catcher, that's a problem."

New York promoted Rene Rivera from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the roster spot. Kevin Plawecki will be the primary catcher while d'Arnaud is sidelined.

d'Arnaud was batting .196 in 46 at-bats this season.

Rivera, 32, has played parts of seven seasons with the Seattle Mariners, Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays. He has a career batting average of .211.
