Jonny Gomes agrees to deal in Japan

Veteran outfielder Jonny Gomes agreed to a one-year contract with the Rakuten Eagles of Japan's Pacific League.

Gomes was a major-league free agent and was unable to land a deal.

Gomes, 35, batted .213 last season while splitting time with the Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals.

He has a .242 career mark with 162 homers in 13 seasons with seven teams.
