Brandt Snedeker watches, wins at Torrey Pines

By The Sports Xchange

Brandt Snedeker didn't hit a single shot as the weather-delayed Farmers Insurance Open wrapped up Monday but he might have been as mentally exhausted as anybody on the grounds at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.

Snedeker completed his round Sunday before play was suspended and his 6-under 282 held up as the winning score. It is the second time Snedeker has won the event -- the other occasion being in 2012 -- and he earned $1.17 million for this title.

"I cannot do this anymore," Snedeker said of his role of being a spectator. "I hate watching this stuff because I have no control. It was awful.

"I tweeted it out this morning that I don't know how families and players deal with it. My wife saw I was a nervous wreck. She told me I needed to go hit balls, do something, just get away."

Snedeker's victory became a reality when K.J. Choi was unable to make a birdie putt on 18. Choi finished one shot back with a final-round 76 and earned $702,000.

Kevin Streelman shot 74 and finished third at 4-under 284. Jimmy Walker (77) and Freddie Jacobson (76) were another shot back.

Snedeker trailed by six shots entering the final round. But that changed when he fired a 3-under 69 to take the lead on Sunday, a day in which heavy rains and wind gusts of over 45 mph plagued the players who began their rounds later in the day.

The start of play was delayed further Monday morning as the overnight winds knocked down several large trees. Because of the hazards, spectators were not allowed on the course.

Snedeker termed the weather issues as something that was in his favor and helped set up his eighth career PGA Tour victory.

"When we got the forecast on Sunday, I knew it was going to be bad," Snedeker said. "It was the perfect scenario. It's what you ask for if you want to win one golf tournament from behind. You need some weather to come in and help you out. And I had that and then some.

"I don't know what weather forecaster forecasted this weather but he was spot-on and I was thankful he was. The winds switched on these guys today and it was tough as nails coming down the stretch this morning and probably was the reason I won."

Snedeker has played superbly since the calendar turned to 2016. He tied for third at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, Hawaii, and second at the Sony Open in Hawaii at Honolulu before winning at Torrey Pines.
