FSU QB Winston benched for half after lewd comment

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has been suspended for the first half of Saturday's game against Clemson after making a lewd comment about women on campus Tuesday.

Florida State interim president Dr. Garnett S. Stokes and athletic director Stan Wilcox released a joint statement Wednesday announcing the punishment.

"As the university's most visible ambassadors, student-athletes at Florida State are expected to uphold at all times high standards of integrity and behavior that reflect well upon themselves, their families, coaches, teammates, the Department of Athletics and Florida State University," the joint statement said. "Student-athletes are expected to act in a way that reflects dignity and respect for others."

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner will also undergo internal discipline.

Several students tweeted on Tuesday that Winston shouted an obscene phrase from an Internet video.

This is the latest in a growing list of off-the-field news for Winston, who was investigated in 2013 for sexual assault -- a Florida State Attorney declined to press charges. He was also suspended from the baseball team after being cited for stealing crab legs and crawfish in April.
