Kurumi Nara tops Klara Zakopalova in Rio for first WTA title

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Kurumi Nara of Japan gained her first career WTA Tour victory Sunday, recording a three-set decision over No. 1 seed Klara Zakopalova at the Rio Open.

The fifth-seeded Nara earned four breaks in the decisive third set en route to a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over her Czech opponent in her first career finals appearance.

The 31-year-old Zakopalova, meanwhile, fell short in her bid for a third career WTA crown, falling to 2-12 all-time in championship tilts. Both her wins came in came in 2005, at 's-Hertogenbosch and Portoroz.

Zakopalova also finished as runner-up at Hobart last month.
