SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Meredith Vieira will make history as the first woman to cover the Olympics for NBC as she fills in for Bob Costas.

Vieira will be taking over for Matt Lauer to cover the events during NBC prime-time at 8 p.m. on Feb. 14. The regular host, Bob Costas, is recovering from a pretty terrible case of pink eye, causing Matt Lauer to step in. Lauer says he needs a break from coverage due to covering the Olympics in the morning and hosting the Today Show at night from Sochi.

"I'm dragging a little today, I didn't sleep at all since yesterday morning," said Lauer, "Meredith's fantastic, she'll be great, she really will, and I know she's going to have a blast. It's fun."

There is no word on when Costas will be back, but he says he hopes it will be soon.
