NHL: St. Louis 5, Edmonton 2

EDMONTON, Alberta, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- David Backes scored the deciding goal for the St. Louis Blues, who beat Edmonton 5-2 for their sixth consecutive win Tuesday.

Backes scored on a power-play at 10:56 of the second period to break a 2-2 tie, and Brian Elliot kept the Oilers off the board the rest of the way while making 16 save over the course of the game.

The Blues outshot the oilers 30-18 and also had goals from Chris Stewart, Maxim Lapierre, Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrik Berglund,

Nail Yakupov and Mark Arcobello scored one goal apiece for the Oilers, who have lost five of their last six games. Ilya Bryzgalov allowed four goals.

Arcobello tied the game 2-2 at 5:10 of the second period, but Backes responded later in the period with a wrist-shot goal after taking a pass at the left circle from Alex Pietrangelo.
