Dolonc advances on upset at Tashkent Open

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Vesna Dolonc claimed a very tight straight-set upset win Tuesday in first-round play at the Tashkent Open in Uzbekistan.

Dolonc edged eighth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, winning just four more points over the course of the 150-point match. Dolonc, however, converted six of her 10 break opportunities, going 4-for-5 in the second set.

Shvedova won barely half (41-of-80) of the points on serve on the loss.

No. 7-seeded Galina Voskoboeva advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Maryna Zanevska by fighting off six of the eight break points she faced. She also had two breaks in each set.

Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor needed just over an hour to dispatch Arina Folts, a local wild-card entrant. Torro-Flor took 64 percent of the points on serve and 62 percent when receiving.

Petra Cetkovska beat Nigina Abduraimova, another Uzbek wild card, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) by going 5-for-5 in break-point chances.

Also Tuesday, as the first round was completed, Misaki Doi topped Evgeniya Rodina 6-4, 6-2 and Julia Glushko beat Tetyana Arefyeva 6-3, 7-5.
