Craig Lee sets course record, takes European Masters lead

CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Craig Lee carded 11 birdies and set a course record at Crans sur Sierre Saturday with a 10-under 61 that gave him the third round lead at the European Masters.

Lee's round put him at 16-under 197 for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Alejandro Canizares, Victor Dubuisson and second-round leader Thomas Bjorn.

Lee had a shot at a round of 59, which has never been done on the European Tour.

Some missed birdie opportunities snuffed the chance for that accomplishment but Lee still turned in the best scorecard ever at the scenic Swiss course and the best in his career.

"Even as an amateur or in a bounce game, I've never managed to get to double figures (under par)," said Lee. "When you hit it and it is executed properly and you see it flying down the pin, it is pretty special."

The Scotsman's round was particularly special in the front nine, where he birdied every hole except the par-4 seventh. He closed with three birdies on the back nine, but bogeyed the 12th and settled for par on the final four holes.
