MILWAUKEE, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Ryan Braun said Thursday he was "deeply ashamed" for his suspension as part of a performance enhancing drug scandal that has rocked baseball.
The Milwaukee outfielder was suspended in late July for the rest of the 2013 season, a total of 65 games.

He issued a lengthy statement Thursday concerning his suspension and said he used banned substances while trying to recover from what he called a "nagging injury" during his MVP season of 2011.
"The products were a cream and a lozenge, which I was told could help expedite my rehabilitation," Braun said. "It was a huge mistake for which I am deeply ashamed and I compounded the situation by not admitting my mistakes immediately."
