BOSTON, July 20 (UPI) -- Hiroki Kuroda tossed seven solid innings and the New York Yankees backed him with 12 hits Saturday in their 5-2 victory over Boston.
Kuroda (9-5) tamed the Red Sox on two runs, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out four en route to a third straight start of surrendering two or fewer runs.
David Robertson hurled a scoreless eighth and Mariano Rivera closed out the victory with his 31st save as New York evened its three-game series with its American League East rival.
Robinson Cano supplied an RBI single during a three-run outburst in the seventh that handed the Yankees a 4-0 lead and later added a sacrifice fly as fourth-place New York broke a three-game skid.
Brett Gardner and Lyle Overbay each had three hits and an RBI in the victory.
Bosox starter John Lackey (7-7) was roughed up for four runs on 10 hits in a 6 1/3-inning effort.
Mike Carp went 3-for-4 and Jonny Gomes drove in a run for AL East-leading Boston.
