MLB: Washington 5, Philadelphia 1

PHILADELPHIA, July 10 (UPI) -- Gio Gonzalez allowed a lone run over seven innings Wednesday and Washington hit four solo homers in downing Philadelphia 5-1.

Philadelphia had won the opening two games of the four-game series, but were held in check by Gonzalez (7-3).

The Washington starter gave up six hits and struck out five while throwing 117 pitches. Tyler Clippard and Rafael Soriano worked an inning each in relief.

It was a scoreless game heading into the fifth, but Anthony Rendon and Wilson Ramos hit solo shots in that inning. Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth added home runs in the sixth.

Washington's final run came in the ninth when Randon scored on a throwing error by reliever Jacob Diekman.

Darin Ruf's seventh-inning homer gave Philadelphia its only run.

Cliff Lee (10-3) surrendered the four Washington home runs among nine hits allowed over seven innings. It was Lee's first setback since May 1, a span of 13 starts.
