Ann Arbor to host 2014 NHL outdoor game

NEW YORK, April 7 (UPI) -- Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor will get another shot at hosting an outdoor NHL game after this season's Winter Classic was scrubbed, the league said Sunday.

The event will be held Jan. 1, 2014, and will feature the Detroit Red Wings taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs at the home of the Michigan Wolverines' football team.

The same two teams set to meet at the stadium -- known as The Big House -- this past New Year's Day, but the annual event was canceled due to the extended labor dispute and lockout between players and NHL team owners.

A realignment approved this year means the Red Wings and Maple Leafs will face off as members of the same division -- Detroit was moved from the Western to the Eastern Conference under the shift.

"The history of the teams' cross-border rivalry, the nobility of The Big House and the growing tradition of the NHL Winter Classic will raise the anticipation for this event to new heights," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.
