Austria's Fenniger wins women's super-G

GARSMICH-PARTINKERCHEN, Germany, March 3 (UPI) -- Anna Fenniger of Austria won Sunday's World Cup women's super-G race in Germany.

Fenniger crossed the finish line at Garmisch in 1 minute, 20.43 seconds, nipping German favorite Maria Hoefl-Riesch by 0.20 seconds and third-place American Julia Mancuso by 0.23 ticks.

Fenniger said she kept her game plan simple, and it paid off with her first career win in the super-G. "I tried to ski a very aggressive and direct line," she said. "I couldn't tell if that was the right thing to do until I crossed the finish line and realized it was actually the case."

The super-G podium was more familiar to Mancuso, who has 15 top-three finishes in the event in her career. She trails Slovenia's Tina Maze in the super-G season standings by 55 points with one more race to go. There are 100 super-G points at stake in the finals in Lenzerheide.

"I wish I could have gained some more points on her (Maze), I need all the luck on my side," Mancuso said. "I need to win the (last) race and then anything can happen
