NHL: Dallas 2, Detroit 1

DETROIT, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Michael Ryder fired in both Dallas goals and the Stars used a potent defense to record a 2-1 victory over Detroit Tuesday in the Red Wings' home opener.

Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen was working on a shutout until 3.4 seconds were left in the contest, instead settling for a stellar performance in which he turned aside 39-of-40 shots for the win.

The Red Wings, meanwhile, were stymied until Damien Brunner finally dented Lehtonen for Detroit's only goal on an assist from Pavel Datsyuk as time was winding down.

Jimmy Howard stopped 30-of-32 shots for the Wings, who fell to 1-2-0 to start the lockout-shortened NHL season.
