PARIS, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- World No. 5-ranked David Ferrer won his first Masters tournament title with a straight-set win Sunday over qualifier Jerzy Janowicz in Paris.

In a tournament noted for its upsets, Sunday's final played to form with Ferrer claiming a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Janowicz. While it was his first Masters title, Ferrer overall has 18 ATP championships, including six in 2012.

Janowicz was game Sunday but Ferrer used a 10th-game break to take a fairly even first set.

Janowicz got a break in the third game of the second set but Ferrer broke back in a 12-point game and held in another 12-pointer before moving ahead for good with a break for a 4-2 second-set lead.

Even with the loss Janowicz, who had never before advanced past the quarterfinals in an ATP event, had a remarkable week. As a qualifier he had to win seven matches to get to the finals, beating five Top 20 players in the process. Among his victims were world No. 3 Andy Murray and ninth-ranked Janko Tipsarevic.

Ferrer collected about $615,000 for the victory, which pushed his career winnings to more than $16 million. The $301,000 runner-up check almost doubled Janowicz's career winnings.
