Fan beating suspects face gun charges
LOS ANGELES, May 22 (UPI) -- Two men accused of beating a San Francisco Giants fan into a coma outside Dodger Stadium face new charges of illegally possessing weapons, prosecutors said.
Marvin Norwood and Louie Sanchez -- already facing assault and mayhem charges in the March 31, 2011, incident -- have also been charged with weapons violations, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.
Each was accused of being felons in possession of firearms in a 14-page indictment revealed by federal authorities during a Tuesday pretrial hearing.
Prosecutors contend Norwood and Sanchez of attacked Bryan Stow of Santa Cruz, Calif., in the stadium parking lot after the Opening Day game between the Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Stow was wearing a Giants jersey when he was assaulted, they say.
The suspects stand accused of possessing two semiautomatic rifles, a semiautomatic shotgun, a semiautomatic pistol and a .357-caliber revolver, which were recovered during a search of Norwood's home, the newspaper reported.
Stow suffered a serious head injury in the alleged assault and was moved from a San Francisco hospital to a rehab center late last year.
Redskins, Cowboys lose salary cap appeals
NEW YORK, May 22 (UPI) -- The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins will have less salary cap room for the next two seasons after losing an appeal of an NFL ruling Tuesday.
Special master Stephen Burbank dismissed the teams' appeal of the league's finding they piled money into the uncapped season of 2010 by front-loading contracts.
As a result, the Redskins were hit with a cap reduction of $36 million over two years, while the Cowboys lost $10 million in cap space over the same time frame.
"We pursued our salary cap claim pursuant to the CBA and we respect and will abide by the arbitrator's decision to dismiss," the Cowboys and Redskins said in a joint statement. "We will continue to focus on our football teams and the 2012 season."
Man, 19, arrested in OKC Thunder shootings
OKLAHOMA CITY, May 22 (UPI) -- A man has been arrested for a shooting in which eight people were wounded after an Oklahoma City Thunder playoff game, police said Monday.
Rodney Dewon Hill, 19, was arrested on eight complaints of shooting with intent to kill, The Oklahoman reported. An arrest warrant alleges Hill was identified by one of the victims of the Monday night shootings, which happened near Chesapeake Energy Arena as thousands of fans gathered there to celebrate the Thunder's defeat of the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals.
One of the victims was critically injured and a pregnant woman was hurt when she was either kicked or hit in the abdomen, paramedics said.
A police affidavit alleged Hill and three others were fighting with several of the shooting victims before someone in Hill's group produced a gun and started shooting into the crowd, the newspaper reported.
"The defendant was known by the victim/witness who identified him," the affidavit states.
Lara O'Leary, an Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman, said paramedics and emergency workers picked up victims in a two-block area about three blocks east of the arena.
Six of the shooting victims were in good condition at OU Medical Center and one was in critical condition early Tuesday, she said.
The Oklahoman said police radio transmissions indicated one person was shot in the back, another in the upper arm and a third in the hand.
"It's unfortunate that it happened on a great night for Oklahoma City and the Thunder, but in our society those things happen," Oklahoma City Thunder spokesman Dan Mahoney said.
He noted the shootings did not happen at the arena.
Before the shootings, Oklahoma City police Capt. Dexter Nelson said there had been "a few skirmishes here and there, and some bumping, but nothing that you wouldn't expect with that many people gathered in one place."
Irving, Rubio lead NBA rookie team
NEW YORK, May 22 (UPI) -- NBA Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving was the only unanimous choice in voting for the NBA All-Rookie First Team, announced Tuesday in New York.
The Cleveland Cavaliers guard got 58 points in voting held among NBA head coaches. Irving had an average of 18.5 points, 5.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 51 games this season.
Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio finished second with 49 points after averaging 10.6 points and 8.2 assists per game in his rookie season.
Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets was third with 46 points, followed by Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors with 43.
Iman Shumpert of the New York Knicks, Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs and Chandler Parsons of the Detroit Pistons were tied for fifth place with 40 points each.
The NBA All-Rookie Second Team included Chandler Parsons of the Houston Rockets, Isaiah Thomas of the Sacramento Kings, MarShon Brooks of the New Jersey Nets, Derrick Williams of Minnesota and Tristan Thompson of Cleveland.
