Brandon McCarthy (2-3) gave up a run on five hits with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings to get the win.

Brian Fuentes put runners on second and third with two away in the ninth, but got Adrian Gonzalez on a grounder to end the game and earn his first save.

Smith singled in a run in the fourth and then drove in the first score of a three-run sixth with a double. Smith came in on a double by Kila Ka'aihue and another double from Brandon Inge brought home the final run of the inning.

The RBI for Inge was his first in his three games as a member of the A's. Oakland signed him Monday after he was released by Detroit and cleared waivers.

Daniel Bard (2-3) gave up four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 to take the loss. The setback was Boston's third in four games.
