CLEVELAND, April 8 (UPI) -- Carlos Santana homered and Derek Lowe tossed seven strong innings Sunday, allowing Cleveland to hang on for a 4-3 victory over Toronto.
Santana's two-run blast in the fifth broke a 2-2 tie and the Indians went on to post their first triumph of the season, avoiding a three-game sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays.
Lowe (1-0) allowed only two unearned runs on five hits, issuing one walk while striking out one.
Chris Perez picked up his first save despite a shaky ninth, inducing Jose Bautista to pop out to end the game with two runners in scoring position.
Blue Jays starter Joel Carreno (0-1) absorbed the loss, yielding four runs on four hits over six frames.
Adam Lind went 2-for-4 with an RBI, delivering a run-scoring single in the eighth that cut Toronto's deficit to a single run.
