NEW YORK, April 2 (UPI) -- Philadelphia Flyers head Coach Peter Laviolette and Pittsburgh Penguins assistant Tony Granato were fined Monday for a weekend incident involving the clubs.
The two coaches engaged in a heated shouting match near the end of Sunday's contest in Pittsburgh between the Flyers and Penguins, after a hard hit inflicted on Flyers center Danny Briere resulted in an on-ice brawl.
The bad blood between the teams began earlier when Penguins center Sidney Crosby -- who has missed most of the season with a concussion -- was cross-checked to the ice from behind by Philadelphia's Brayden Schenn.
Some 50 minutes in penalties were handed out for the altercation.
Meanwhile, Laviolette and Granato stood on the boards separating the two benches hurling invective at each other.
Laviolette had to be restrained by assistant Craig Berube as he verbally accosted Pens head Coach Dan Bylsma, while Granato did most of the yelling in return.
Laviolette was slapped with a $10,000 penalty was Granato was fined $2,500, the NHL said.
