Federer, top seeds win at Rotterdam

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Top seeds Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych posted wins Wednesday in wrapping up the first round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in the Netherlands.

Federer, seeded No. 1, defeated Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 6-4 in a very efficient 67 minutes. Federer lost 12 points over 10 service games and didn't face a break point. He cashed in two of the six break chances he had against Mahut.

Berdych, the No. 2 seed, beat Czech countryman Lukas Rosol 6-4, 6-2. Berdych also only lost 12 points on serve.

Also in the first round, third-seeded Juan Martin del Potro battled for 2 1/2 hours before finishing off a 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 decision over Michael Llodra. Del Potro, like Federer and Berdych, didn't lose his serve on the day.

The second round began Wednesday with Jarkko Nieminen just getting past Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) and Nikolay Davydenko topping Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-1.

Other first-round winners Wednesday were Alex Bogomolov Jr., Karol Beck and Marcos Baghdatis.
