MELBOURNE, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Unseeded Ekaterina Makarova ousted five-time champion Serena Williams and earned her first Grand Slam quarterfinal berth Monday at the Australian Open.

Makarova, No. 56 in the world, eliminated Williams, seeded No. 12, 6-2, 6-3. Williams had nine aces but also seven double faults and 37 unforced errors in having a 17-game-winning streak at Melbourne broken. Williams won the event in 2009 and 2010 but missed last year's Australian Open because of injury.

Makarova played a steady match, countered her 17 unforced errors with 16 winners and only faced two break points. She won 63 percent of the points on serve and nearly half -- 29-of-60 -- off Williams' serve.

Makarova's quarterfinal foe will be fellow Russian Maria Sharapova, who capped the women's fourth round with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over 14th-seeded Sabine Lisicki.

Sharapova, the No. 4 seed, lost just five games in her first three matches in Melbourne and took a 3-0 first-set lead. But Lisicki ran off the next six games to take the set. Sharapova didn't lose her serve after that but the performance wasn't solid because she had to overcome eight double faults and 47 unforced errors.

No. 2-seeded Petra Kvitova reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over 21st-seeded Ana Ivanovic and unseeded Sara Errani topped Zheng Jie 6-2, 6-1 behind six service breaks.

Kvitova will go against Errani in the quarterfinals, the first meeting between the two. Sharapova is 2-0 against Makarova, with a pair of clay-court wins last year.

The quarterfinal pairings in the other half of the draw have world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki going against defending champion and 11th-seeded Kim Clijsters and third-seeded Victoria Azarenka facing No. 8-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska.
