Fan gets 30-year ban after goalie attack

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- A 19-year-old man who rushed onto a Dutch soccer field and attacked AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado has been banned for 30 years, officials say.

The soccer hooligan, identified as Wesley van W. of Almere, the Netherlands, won't be allowed into any Dutch soccer stadiums for three decades following the Wednesday incident at the Amsterdam Arena during a match between AFC Ajax and AZ Alkmaar, the Dutch news service ANP reported.

The Amsterdam club's attorneys announced the ban Saturday.

Van W. kicked Alvardo during the attack, and the goalkeeper responded by kicking the fan twice as he lay on the ground. AZ Alkmaar refused to continue playing after the incident.

The fan, who remained jailed over Christmas, has been charged with aggravated assault and of violating a previous stadium ban issued against him, the news service reported.

Esteban and AFC Ajax have filed suit against van W., who was able to enter the match using the ticket of another fan.
