MLS: Los Angeles 2, New York 1

CARSON, Calif., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Goals by Mike Magee and Landon Donovan Thursday allowed Los Angeles to survive an early scare and reach the MLS semifinals with a 2-1 win over New York.

The Galaxy, owners of the best regular-season record in the league, defeated New York 1-0 in the first of the two-game, aggregate series. Los Angeles, however, surrendered a goal to Luke Rogers in the 4th minute Thursday.

Needing a score to regain the overall advantage, Los Angeles got one from Magee in the 42nd minute on an assist from David Beckham.

Beckham was then knocked down in the penalty area by Roy Miller in the 74th minute and Donovan converted the penalty shot to ensure the Galaxy would advance to a semifinal meeting with Real Salt Lake.

New York put up a battle without midfielder Rafa Marquez, who missed the game after receiving a red card at the end of the first game of the series.

MLS officials announced earlier Thursday Marquez would be suspended an additional two games, which means he would have missed the rest of the playoffs even if New York had upset Los Angeles.

A league statement said Marquez had displayed "violent and aggressive" behavior that "put the league in disrepute."

Marquez tried to heat butt the Galaxy's Adam Cristman following the final whistle of the first game and took a swing at Cristman as well.
