Virginia rain scrubs NASCAR qualifying

MARTINSBURG, Va., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- NASCAR gave pole position at the Tums Fast Relief 500 to points leader Carl Edwards Saturday after qualifying runs were called off due to rain at Martinsville.

Edwards, who was assigned the top slot for Sunday's race by virtue of his lead in the points race, will be alongside teammate Matt Kenseth in the front row when Sunday's 500-lap event starts.

Edwards said he was not put out by missing an opportunity to give the Virginia track a final shakedown trip. "I think qualifying is one of the most important parts of this race, and it's no secret that has been a tough thing for me and Matt as well," Edwards said. "I think it's the best case for us that we get to start on the front row."

Brad Keselowski will start third Sunday, followed by Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick.

Saturday's rains tapered off enough to allow time for the scheduled Sprint Cup practice laps and qualifying for the Camping World Truck Series.
