MLS: Portland 1, D.C. United 1 (tie)

WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Dwayne De Rosario's 13th goal of the year Wednesday lifted D.C. United into a 1-1 tie with Portland, a result that pushed New York closer to a playoff berth.

United and Portland went into the game as the only teams left in MLS with a chance to unseat New York from the final wild-card playoff berth. United needed a win to stay alive in the post-season chase and was eliminated when it could come up with only one point.

Portland still has a slim hope of making the playoffs, but to do so the Timbers must defeat Salt Lake Saturday and New York must lose to Philadelphia Thursday.

Portland has 41 points and New York has 43.

Wednesday's game had been scheduled for Aug. 28, but it was postponed due to Hurricane Irene.

Kenny Cooper scored on a header to give Portland the lead in the 24th minute. De Rosario's tying goal came in the 73rd minute off a feed from Josh Wolff.
