RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Jiri Tlusty gave Carolina a two-goal lead with 6:28 left in regulation Wednesday and the Hurricanes held on to defeat Boston 3-2.
The defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins fell to 1-3 to start the season. Carolina -- which has given up 15 goals, more than any other team in the NHL -- won its first game in four tries.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead into the third and expanded the advantage on a wrist shot by Anthony Stewart 3:42 into the period.
Tyler Seguin cut Boston's deficit just 25 seconds later, but Tlusty restored Carolina's two-goal cushion. Tlusty is in his fifth NHL season and had scored just 17 previous goals in 152 games.
Brad Marchand's second goal of the season again brought the Bruins within one, but they could not get another shot past Cam Ward, who finished with 27 saves.
Tim Thomas, the winner of last year's Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender, stopped 31 shots in suffering his second loss in three appearances.
