NHL: Philadelphia 3, New Jersey 0

NEWARK, N.J., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Ilya Bryzgalov posted a 20-save shutout Saturday, his first for Philadelphia, and guided the Flyers to a 3-0 blanking of New Jersey.

Bryzgalov, signed by the Flyers to a nine-year, $51 million contract during the off-season, gave Philadelphia its first regular-season shutout since April 2010.

It was the 24th career whitewash for the former Phoenix Coyotes netminder.

Claude Giroux scored in the second period, rookie Matt Read got his first NHL goal and Wayne Simmonds added his initial tally as a Flyer.

The Devils lost their season opener and Peter DeBoer's debut as head coach.

Martin Brodeur allowed three goals on 29 shots.
