MLB: Milwaukee 4, Arizona 1

MILWAUKEE, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Yovani Gallardo tossed eight innings of one-run ball Saturday and Milwaukee bested Arizona 4-1, taking the opener of its NL divisional playoff series.

Gallardo (1-0) notched his third victory against the Diamondbacks this season, limiting them to four hits, issuing only one walk and striking nine in a dominating performance.

The Brewers right-hander, who finished up the regular season with 36 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings, tossed 66 of his 106 pitches for strikes.

John Axford notched a save with a 1-2-3 ninth for the victors.

Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer and Ryan Braun went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Milwaukee, which finished with the best home record in baseball at 57-24.

Ian Kennedy (0-1) absorbed the loss for Arizona, allowing four runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Ryan Roberts smacked a solo homer to account for the D-backs' only tally.
