NEW YORK, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and a resurgent Serena Williams each won Thursday and will meet in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Saturday.

Wozniacki, still looking for her first Grand Slam title, got past 10th-seeded Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) while Williams, who has 13 major tournament championships, eliminated 17th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5, 6-1.

They will play in Saturday's semifinals. Williams has won both times they previously met.

Williams is 20-2 since ending a nearly yearlong layoff due to injuries. She had a shaky first set versus Pavlyuchenkova, dropping serve three times, but lost just three points on serve in the second set.

Wozniacki advanced by taking a 73-minute second set in a tiebreaker. She also lost her serve three times -- all in the second set -- and had just nine winners.

The other women's singles semifinal has ninth-seeded Samantha Stosur going against world No. 92 Angelique Kerber.

Stosur knocked off second-seeded Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-3 without facing a break point.

Kerber, who never before had advanced beyond the third round of a major tournament, beat 26th-seeded Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 by saving all four of the break points she faced in the third set.

Tournament officials said due to weather postponements this week they were moving the women's semifinals to Saturday and the singles final to Sunday afternoon. The men's singles final was moved to Monday.
